Oneechanbara Vortex Movie Review

[SkewedS] Oneechanbara Vortex
Synopsis: Aya, a woman skilled with swords and possesses the cursed blood of the Imichi wanders through the silent streets, clearing zombies in her way along with her sister Saki.

While fending off attackers, they encountered Misery, a mysterious woman who knows the mystery behind the zombie outbreak. She asked Aya and Saki to assist her in her goal to stop an organization who killed Saki's parents and is behind the volleys of zombies.

Willing to help Misery and end the catastrophe, Aya and Saki got caught into a one-sided situation and later unfolds the secret of the organization.

Though Oneechanbara Vortex is the sequel to the first movie, the characters are different and the story has no relation with the first movie.

The story isn't well exciting to start off, the actions scenes aren't much convincing either. The film also has numerous non-progressing spots that elongates a scene which makes you feel you've watched that part long enough. One of the many examples would be the ritual scene and the final boss fight.

Most of the CGIs or special effects are also not convincing enough. Blood splattering through the screen is OK once in a while but it hinders the audiences view on the later part. Another non-pleasing part would be the red tints. One noticeable part of the movie to intensify the battle scene with a flock of zombies would be shaking and tilting of the screen. From time to time, you'll get distracted with the blood splatters.

Comparing with the first movie, Aya and Saki isn't the silent type. They have a lot more dialogues they threw. There's more civilians who took part this time though mostly are kids. Aya's old friend Reiko have a small role/appearance with the movie thus, there was little action with her rifle skill.

The "cursed blood" of Aya has been defined more in this movie than in the prequel; whenever Aya is in bloodlust mode, she goes into berserk though she didn't went to full-power. Aya and Saki's fighting scenes were limited in terms of movement, you can really see they had a hard time swinging their swords specially Aya since she wields two. You'll heed she shouts and grunts a lot too.

You may notice on the film that one of the civilian kids is wearing a Go-On Red Mask. Go-on Red is from the tokusatsu series Engine Sentai Go-Onger.

Overall, you can say that this movie is just your average low-budget film. If you have seen the first movie, you'll probably think the prequel's better.
