Malaysian Newspaper Pokes Fun at Japan Quake, Tsunami

Ultraman Tsunami
After the massive quake and tsunami that hit Japan last Friday, Malaysian newspaper Berita Harian published a caricature in their editor's column on Sunday that depicts the popular tokusatsu hero Ultraman trying to outrun an incoming tsunami.

The publication has received tremendous criticisms by readers, who accuse the editors as being "inconsiderate and distasteful". Several political leaders have even stepped out and demand a public apology.

The statement of apology was issued on the official site and on social networking sites, like Facebook and Twitter, said that Berita Harian had "no intention of poking fun" at the disastrous earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan on Friday.

The newspaper expressed their sympathy and stated to feel the suffering of the people of Japan.

  7. A joke is good if shared with just few friends. But if it's publication we're talking about, whether on the net, on-air or on print, there comes responsibility. We should be very sensitive on how other people would feel. How would we react if the joke was on us? The Japanese, The Malaysians, The Americans, The Filipinos, whatever we call ourselves, we're all brothers, just born in a different point in the globe. What hurts you hurts me too. Let's just be more considerate towards the feelings of one another.

Leave self righteousness god shit out of this. It's a tragedy that happened because of nothing else but chance natural phenomenon. Plain and simple.
Get off your high horse and remember they are people to just like everyone of us, and they're losing their lives, their family, and their homes and regular lives out there. Stop being selfish and a dick.

    Woah, flame wars and stuff.
    Blame GekiDan for this post.

I thought this site is for entertainment, games and stuff, never knew they put politics here too. The entirety of that issue is politics, not "Japanese entertainment". The constitution of Ultraman in this issue is very minuscule and insignificant, it's just an editorial sketch.

If you're going to put every unimportant appearances of tokusatsu heroes/shows not even related to entertainment, then you're missing a lot of stuff. Start with children's wear and fancy food products.

    TL;DR - Blame GekiDan.

  26. Anonymous Says:

Well, I'm not really into politics and I don't really see this "editorial" cartoon related to politics.

^To the blog post writer. --- It's just your imagination.

Man, to be honest I don't see any problem with the editorial cartoon. This cartoon us not your typical manga or western comics that shows obvious mockery of life. Most editorial cartoons today, are very much planned and poses much sensitivity that you can ever realize. I'm not sure if your seeing the symbolisms in the picture, but I suggest you rather interpret the cartoon far from the idea of poking fun at your favorite giant hero.

I hope this enlightens anyone just what the Giant of Light symbolizes....

P.S. Thumbs up to Erik Katukomal for a good comment too.

While animated cartoon porn do came from Japan, it doesn't mean it's a country of perverts. Who are you to say that in the first place? God? A sinless divine person? You're just a dimwitted self-righteous man. Look at yourself on the mirror first

Knowing the people of malaysia, I'm pretty sure that this cartoon was published based on the policy coming from non-Chinese and non-India people. Muslim malaysians are seem quite radical. They sometimes like to spread racist/religious propaganda against the opposites.

Maksudnye lbh kurang-mg tak patut pn bende tu but Japanese have the heart of ultraman. no matter what happens, Japanese wont give up, they'll believe in the future, no matter how many times they fell, they will rise again. thats why Japan will rise again for sure. Malaysia, thanks for thinking that Japanese are like ultraman.
