Copyright Law Changes Would Affect Cosplay

Copyright Law Changes Would Affect Cosplay
Media artist Kazuhiko Hachiya left a warning that if Japan joins the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP), the resulting changes in the Copyright Law of Japan would affect cosplay, among other derivative works.

TPP is described as "an Asia-Pacific regional trade agreement currently being negotiated among the United States and eight other partners" (Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, and Vietnam). The agreement aims to make copyright laws uniform across all the signatory countries.

Japan is still not included in the signatory countries, but Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda will be attending the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Hawaii this weekend and expected announce if they'll join.

Under the current law, the police and prosecutors cannot act against copyright infringement unless the copyright holders themselves file a formal complaint. But under TPP, such violations will no longer require a complaint for prosecution. The proposed changes under TPP would also allow statutory damages to be levied against defendants.

Hachiya said that he fears that the police would be given the discretion on what to prosecute, particularly on "erotic" material. He further asserted that even cosplay outfits can been prosecuted if the police decides that they are not allowed.

Many manga artists, including Akamatsu, creator of Love Hina and Negima. He stated that the changes "would destroy derivative dōjinshi." He added, "And as a result, the power of the entire manga industry would also diminish."

This is the worst possible choice... The point of Cosplay or costumes in general is to imitate a character they love! And to me, personally, it is the costumes that reflect originality and creativity that impress me; not something they bought at a store that was stock made.

You're right! If we cannot imitate our favourite manga/anime/toku characters, then why consider them as our favourite role models?Does not make sense right? So Japan, please don't do this,or I will live Kamen Rider forever.Bitches.

I SO hope that the prime minister refuses (declines) to join the TPP. Cosplay is a big part of the anime/manga community and should Japan join, like Ken Akamatsu said, the decision would diminish the entire manga industry, which is Japan's biggest export product if I am not mistaken as well.

for those who don't get it, that means FEWER manga and anime that will be released if not also cause the complete halt of some of your favorite anime and manga. Also as a possible ripple effect, the Toku community as well could be affected.

first they capture people uploading anime, now they want to ban cosplay. what's next ??

what's the harm of cosplaying anyway.... we do it for fun and indirectly it also help promotes the anime/toku series. or maybe the governments just want to earn money from us, for cosplaying in public ?

    Kamen Rider Thorn...

Manga is Japan's biggest export. I really could no longer at all take you seriously after that. You sound like a dumb weaboo. OH NO MY ANIME. CARS AND ELECTRONICS are and probably always will be Japan's largest export. Manga isn't even close. It also does NOT mean some current anime/manga will just end. Jeez...

Who are you? A Japan hater? Then why are you here and commenting too? Go to your shit and boring life that doesnt make your character been showed. Cosplaying making other understand your personality and your interests. Animes are not the largest Japan's export but it is the one of the famous in all countries. If you ask someone in my country to tell you whats the names of the Japanese car industries they will say you : I dont know..... but if you tell them what do you know about Japan they will say to you "Animes" in just a sec. Of course this depends on age and interests but I think Animes (and Mangas of course) are the best well-known exports of Japan. Finally as I am always saying ... IF YOU DONT LIKE JAPAN AND THEIR EXPORTS DONT COMMENT ON SUCH SITES BECAUSE ARE ONLY ABOUT JAPAN (and sometimes about PR too). If you are interest in downloading ONLY them dont visit this page. As for the law ... ITS TERRIBLE and I hope that Japan wont be participating on this.

Not only are you a foolish weaboo but you don't even know your own stuff. I bet you pronounce manga like mango with an a. And there's no such thing as "animes" and "mangas". Lastly, you're a straight up liar if you say people in your country know anime before Japanese cars.

One of the things that I always found amazing with Japan was the lengths their fans go for stuff they love. I mean, they have a huge convention dedicated to fan made comics, figures, games, etc.
Though, when I think about it, I don't see the big deal. It's the same copyright laws that America has, right? Yet I see deviart and other sites full of fan art of current running American shows, comics, etc. Look at the costumes people wear to Comic Con and stuff.
Companies here don't care about this stuff, why would Japan?
Well, I guess all those porn comics might be a problem...

The good effect of the copyright law is there will be no fansub anymore but the bad effect is there will be no cosplay anymore.

The days of free speech and democracy are over, it seems. I hate New Zealand. Stupid laws passed by stupid governments who don't even know what the laws they are passing completely entail or will affect. Ugh.

Cospley will be just fine. If that was against the law then places like Comic Con and other functions in the US would have dressing up banned, and even art commissions put out of circulation.
