Grave of the Fireflies Live Action Film Rights Acquired by UK Company

UK company Dresden Pictures had recently acquired the rights for a live action adaptation of Akiyuki Nosaka's semi-autobiographical novelGrave of the Fireflies”. Back in 1988, Studio Ghibli adapted it into an anime.

According to producers Liam Garvo and James Heath, they aim to begin shooting a film in 2014. Dresden Pictures is the first overseas company to obtain the rights for the story.

A live action adaptation had already been aired on November 1st, 2005. NTV produced the drama in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.

“Grave of the Fireflies” took place in the final days of World War II. Orphans 14-year-old Seita and his four-year-old sister Setsuko move into an abandoned bomb shelter. It follows the sibling's struggles to survive their hardships, whole Japan is on the losing end of the war.

    Why is this necessary? The 1988 anime is one of the greatest films ever made. No live-action adaptation can hope to surpass it, so why bother? (Other than $$$, of course.)
