AKB48 Bags “Japan Records Award” for the Second Time!

The annual music awards program “The 54th Kagayaku! Japan Record Awards” announces that the idol group AKB48 received the grand prize “Japan Record Award” for their 26th single, “Manatsu no Sounds good!”.

In 2011, AKB48 also won the same award for their 22nd single, “Flying Get”, making this their second consecutive year of winning the “Japan Record Award”. They are the first girl group to achieve such feat.

Winning the award consecutively was previously achieved by Takashi Hosokawa (1982 ~ 1983), Akina Nakamori (1985 ~ 1986), Namie Amuro (1996 ~ 1997), Ayumi Hamasaki (2001 ~ 2003), and EXILE (2008 ~ 2010).

AKB48's “Manatsu no Sounds good” topped “Oricon Yearly Singles Ranking” for 2012, selling 1,820,056 copies as of announcement. Selling 1,617,000 copies in its first week, this created a new record as the highest sales on Oricon’s single sales chart for a first week! It is currently the group's top selling single.
