Sony Officially Stops Production of PlayStation 2 Consoles Worldwide

That's it! After Japan stopped shipping new PlayStation 2 consoles, Sony Entertainment confirms that the production of brand-new PS2 consoles has now ceased worldwide.

The PlayStation 2 was originally released in 2000, and became the world's most successful home video game console of all time, with over 150 million consoles sold. It's now PlayStation 3's role to continue the success of Sony's resident console, until PlayStation 4 shows up in the near future.

Probably the last PlayStation 2 game, Final Fantasy XI: Seekers of Adoulin, the fifth expansion for the FFXI online game, will be released this March to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the game.
