"Gatchaman" Debuts at #6 in Japan Box Office Weekend [Updated]

The live-action film adaptation of the classic sci-fi anime, entitled “GATCHAMAN”, manages to debut at the sixth spot of the Japan Box Office Weekend.

Studio Ghibli's "The Wind Rises" is still the top film for this week, now on its fifth consecutive week. Coming in second is "Monsters University", and "Star Trek into Darkness" at third.

The film earned 115,650,690 yen (US$1,178,017) on 307 screens.

The five serve as agents of the International Science Organization in Tokyo in the near future. Galactor, a mysterious group whose technology far surpasses that of humans, has declared war on the entire world and has already subjugated half of it. A mysterious crystal-like object called a "stone," is humanity's only hope. Those who are able to draw out the power of the "stones" are forced to train to become special agents in a five-person team called "Gatchaman."

Directed by Toya Sato (Kaiji, Gokusen), with screenplay by Yūsuke Watanabe (20th Century Boys, Gantz, Bloody Monday, Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods), Gatchaman premieres August 24th.

@anon1 it's not a bomb, a bomb happens when a movie didn't reach its production cost. Beside, this movie obviously doesnt stand a chance against Ghibli and Disney

I saw this at Fantasia film festival in Montreal.

    This film is really bad.

It starts off really strong with a great action sequence for the first 15 minutes of the film, but then after that we're treated to over an hour of exposition and mundane dialogue with a story that is really confusing and something about a love triangle you can see coming from miles away. The finale is also pretty sloppy with one character after being mortally wounded goes on talking for about 5 minutes.

My rating for this film 3/10
