A couple of Q&A was published in Japan by Dragon Ball creator Toriyama Akira. Saikyo Jump got a "Twel-Buu Mysteries" and some were part of the bonus material of the new color editions of the Cell arc in volumes 4 up to 6.
Though there are lots of new things and questions answered in those Q&As, the attention of his readers was caught on Toriyama's revelation of Androids 17 and 18. No. 17 was named Lapis and No.18 got Lazuli.
Also, the creator revealed the life of Android 17 after the Cell arc. According to Toriyama, No. 17 worked as a park ranger at a nature preserve. He shows no mercy to poachers which made him very suited for this kind of work. Aside from that, he was paid so well in his work and was able to get married to a zoologist and got two adopted children.

holy crap, 17 is married and has children!?
The 17 stuff, that's neat to know. But those names, it's better off not knowing honestly, we've known them as 17 & 18 for so long, giving them actual names now is kinda pointless.
Interesting though in GT 17 was already shown alive and well but no family, but I don't get the part where 18 got pregnant with krillin?
Anon 3; the reason 18 was able to have kids was because 17 and 18 aren't Androids, they're cyborgs. Androids are robots that look like humans, whereas Cyborgs are humans with robotic implants, 18 still had some humans parts in her, which is why she was able to have kids
Krillin wished to make 18 to be human..
So that makes Cell as Alucard..

^They're not actual androids. they're cyborgs, so its entirely possible for 18 to have reproductive organs
It's like finding out that Mr. Satan's real name is Mark. Kinda insignificant when it's years after the fact.
Why're they named after a gem ?
This explains how the GT arc is not Canon to what Toriyama envisioned.
They are named after a gem, probably hinting at their eye colors.
And Krillin didn't request 18 (and 17) to be turned into human, he ask the dragon to strip the destructive bomb from their bodies. And yes, both are Cyborg and not Android (like 16, 19, and 20) so they still have the ability to, uhm... reproduce :D
This info might be late, or not significant anymore, but considering the new Dragon Ball Kai is airing (the Buu arc), I think its significance has somewhat return...
# 20 is half human. He was the scientist that makes all this cyborgs/androids in the first place.
