Anime Series Review: Juuni Senshi Bakaretsu Etoranger

Juuni Senshi Bakuretsu Etorangers
Happy Chinese New Year! I thought I might do a review on a Japanese Anime based on the 12 Zodiac signs called Eto Ranger. I remembered watching this Anime dubbed in Tagalog in TV-5. The show ran for 39 episodes only.

Eto Ranger as the show's opening suggests is about the 12 Zodiac animals. Princess Aura the ruler of Mugen seeks the twelve heroes to protect the Novel Worlds from collapsing due to the influence of darkness. The twelve are Bakamaru (mouse), Hols (ox), Gao (tiger), Cream (rabbit), Drago (Dragon), Nyorori (snake with telepathic abilities), Pakaracchi (horse), Souffle (goat), Monk (monkey), Tart (rooster), Pochiro (dog) and Urii (pig). Along the way, the Eto Rangers meet different versions of Western and Japanese stories that were distorted no thanks to Nyanma.

The enemies of the Eto Rangers were the dark cats. Long ago, Chocolat was disqualified from the race to become one of the twelve protectors. According to an ancient Chinese legend, the cat was disqualified and the mouse took its place as the leader. This allowed a malevolent entity known as Dark God Bagi who had a female voice actress to manipulate Chocolat into becoming her puppet Nyanma. Nyanma is basically a child in an adult's body as the puppet ruler of the dark kingdom.

This results to a lot of complicated plots like Bakamaru's fear of cats (considering he's a mouse) or that Nyanma was actually Chocolat, Gao's friend. As the series goes, everyone msut really face their courage even in the faces of death. While it seemed that the other Eto Rangers died during the later battles, this also led them to discover Bagi manipulated them. In the end, all the Eto Rangers and a repentant Nyanma joined forces to destroy Bagi (who used Dark Kilinda as its body in the final battle) to save Mugen from collapsing.

The series' running for only 39 episodes might be due to a lack of popularity. It didn't stop me from getting entertained though as said, quality is more important than quantity. The series is still worth a rewatch for me.

  2. If I'm not mistaken, someone's doing an ongoing project to sub Eto Rangers. Currently, 25 episodes are uploaded in YouTube. Here's the link, https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTV6pclq51124wCCTyiiImAMV99qpbPep
