Missing some live-action Ghost in the Shell movie news? Well we got something new for you as the first image of Scarlett Johansson as Major Motoko Kusanagi has surfaced!

And here's an interesting information for the movie:

"The film, which is based on the famous Kodansha Comics manga series of the same name, written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow, is produced by Avi Arad (“THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 1 & 2,” “IRON MAN”), Ari Arad (“GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE”), and Steven Paul (“GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE”). Michael Costigan (“PROMETHEUS”), Tetsu Fujimura (“TEKKEN”), Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, whose animation studio Production I.G produced the Japanese "GHOST IN THE SHELL” film and television series, and Jeffrey Silver (“EDGE OF TOMORROW,” “300”) will executive produce.

Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “GHOST IN THE SHELL” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.
“We are so pleased to be in Wellington to shoot ‘GHOST IN THE SHELL,’” said producers Avi Arad, Ari Arad, Michael Costigan and Jeffrey Silver. “The city boasts state-of-the-art production facilities and a rich urban landscape that make it an ideal setting for a sci-fi action film. The crew-base in New Zealand working on the film is first class, and working with Sir Richard Taylor and the team at Weta Workshop is inspirational on every level. The people of New Zealand have been terrific partners in helping us bring this story and its beloved characters to audiences around the world and we are thankful for their continued hospitality."

based on the history of adaptations of anime and video games, I'm already certain this movie is going to fail

When I hear the name "Motoko Kusanagi", of COURSE I picture Scarlett Johansson *sarcasm*. No. Seriously, no. At least they were transparent about the casting, instead of trying to be covert about it (Benedict Cumberbatch as "John Harrison", AKA Khan, in Star Trek Into Darkness). Rinko Kikuchi anyone? Rila Fukushima? Or could have gone out on a limb and cast an unknown. And the worse thing is this will be the first mainstream introduction to the story since everyone hasn't either seen the original movie (which in part inspired The Matrix), the TV series Stand Alone Complex or read the original manga. It's a shame that ANOTHER opportunity to cast a nonwhite lead was squandered (Gods of Egypt, Edge of Tomorrow, Aloha, The Last Airbender, Cloud Atlas, Lone Ranger, Prince of Persia, The Hunger Games trilogy, Argo, Dragonball Evolution).

white-washed movie. original is best; this stinks. will not be watching

I'm disgusted. The white washing in Hollywood need to stop. This was probably one of the few movies to have the oputunity to have an Asian lead, and they effing blew it.

I've never been a fan of hers, nothing against her but like Julia Roberts I don't see what the big deal is. Ethinicity aside, it looks like another superhero movie filmed in the dark.

  7. Meanwhile if Japanese themselves make anime adaptation which takes set in western culture, they're blatantly cast all the characters with Japanese actors/actress

People blames that it is not a japanese actress, but the same people enjoy Power Rangers...

"Or could have gone out on a limb and cast an unknown"

Yes, because EVERY producer and executive in Hollywood wants to GO OUT ON A LIMB when they are investing HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF DOLLARS into a project.

This isn't "whitewashing" any more than when Japan were "yellow washing" when they made Ghost Negotiator [a Japanese version of Ghostbusters]. It is being made by Americans, for Americans.

Do you think a BILLION DOLLAR FRANCHISE like GitS doesn't have a say in how they film is made? That they didn't give any kind of approval? Good lord you people are whiny, clueless children.

  10. Ghost negotiator takes place in japan. Were you expecting white actors? There can't be Japanese Ghostbusters? Just because anime characters don't look Japanese doesn't mean they aren't. Take your smart-ass comment and shove it.
