My Top 10 Secondary Kamen Riders

Ever since their introduction, the secondary Kamen Riders have added more variety to each show. There are now more characters for more people to enjoy, and not to mention added toy sales as well.

So in this latest top 10, I'm counting down my favorite secondary Kamen Riders.

As always, these won't come in any particular order, and if you'd like to share your own favorites, please leave them in the comments.

1. Kamen Rider Knight

Shinji might've been the main protagonist, but we all know that Ren is the REAL hero of Kamen Rider Ryuki. Ren is better than Shinji in every way, and it really makes one wonder why Shinji has been the main character in the first place. And if Batman became a Kamen Rider, this is how he should have been.

2. Kamen Rider Cross-Z

Rarely do we see in the Kamen Rider Series a secondary rider that completely complements the main rider. Ryuga and Sento share a close relationship that's surprisingly rare between main and secondary riders that have come before them. It's the balance between supporting the main character, while having his own solid story that makes Ryuga a great secondary rider.

3. Kamen Rider Garren

Now before anyone starts a war in the comments, I'm gonna say that Garren is the TRUE secondary rider in Kamen Rider Blade. Sure, Hajime/Chalice gets a lot more plot focus, but Sakuya, by definition and function, is still the secondary rider. As the more senior rider, he acts as a mentor to Kazuma in his earlier days at BOARD, then later to Mutsuki. Garren also has his shining moments such as overcoming and defeating the Peacock Undead, and sacrificing himself to defeat the Giraffa Undead.

4. Kamen Rider G3

The first officially recognized secondary Kamen Rider, G3 deserves a spot on this list. Unlike Shoichi and Ryo who became riders through magical means, Makoto is the only rider who is completely human. Makoto showed that any man can win through perseverance and hard work, and he even surprised the Els of Earth and Wind that a mere human was able to stand up to them.

5. Kamen Rider Brave

Kamen Rider Brave is honestly my favorite secondary rider of all time. His RPG motif and swordsmanship really appeal to me. His character development throughout the show is something that I like as well. Also, with his final form he becomes the most powerful rider in this list.

6. Kamen Rider Beast

First and foremost I love Beast's lion motif. Kousuke's character also complements the usually stiff Haruto, and had a rather friendly rivalry with him in exterminating Phantoms. Nonetheless, they end up working together anyway to save people.

7. Kamen Rider Baron

It's rare when a main rider and secondary rider form a relationship solely based on rivalry. Though they worked together from time to time, Kaito maintained an antagonistic attitude towards Kouta even towards the end. Despite his desire for power, Kaito cared deeply for his team and still maintained a code of honor. And as a rare case where the secondary rider becomes the final boss, this makes the final battle with Kouta more poignant.

8. Kamen Rider Ixa

Keisuke Nago has quite a dark past among the secondary riders in this list. Prior the series, his sense of justice and intolerance for sin pushed him so far as to even convince his own father to commit suicide. However, upon meeting Wataru and eventually learning his identity as Kiva Keisuke learns to become a better person. Also, Ixa looks awesome.

9. Kamen Rider Accel

Ryu Terui wanted nothing more than to find the individual responsible for the murder of his parents and younger sister. And when he meets the mysterious Shroud and receiving the Accel Driver and Accel Memory from her, Ryu comes to Fuuto in hopes of claiming his vengance. Initially driven by rage, Ryu began to show his true, good nature through his interactions with the people of Narumi Detective Agency especially, Akiko. Years later, he's shown to be a loving father to his daughter.

10. Kamen Rider Gatack

The only secondary rider who appears much later than his counterparts who came before and after him, Arata Kagami still served his role as a secondary rider by being the one closest to the main character Souji. Their relationship also drove the show by complementing each others' personalities. Gatack and Kabuto definitely made for a dynamic duo, especially in the movie and the Hyper Battle DVD.

Honorable Mentions:
 Kamen Rider Specter
Kamen Rider Zeronos
Kamen Rider Meteor
Kamen Rider Birth (Akira Date)
