A new featurette for 2013's Hollywood tokusatsu film “PACIFIC RIM” had been released centering around the creation of giant monsters called "Kaiju", as well as the film's giant robots, the "Jaegers".



Del Torro explains how the team conceptualize the appearance of the kaiju, and how he wanted NOT to reference any mecha franchises in the designs of their Jaegers. He also mentioned that Tetsujin 28 was his favorite mecha anime.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.

To premiere on July 12th, Pacific Rim is Guillermo Del Torro's homage to the Japanese monsters, or kaiju films.
