2. Battle Royale (2000)
Perhaps you have heard of this one. If not, it is a movie you are sure to enjoy. There is lots of blood, gore, and suspense in a world where teenagers are forced to kill each other. Sound familiar? Like a predecessor of The Hunger Games? Don’t despair, though, as the message regarding the future of young people is hopeful in this movie.
3. Seven Samurai (1954)
This movie must go on the list of summer movies to see, as many say it is the greatest Japanese movie ever made. This alone is enough to warrant seeing it. In this action-packed film, Samurai soldiers join with villagers to fight the enemy. It’s a gripping film, as various characters and their motivations are explored. This movie is excellent, too, for learning more of the Samurai culture.
4. Tokyo Story (1953)
An old black and white movie, this movie is much more low-key than the previous ones. It’s more personal, as we are whisked into the lives of a family and the inevitability of their changing lives. An older couple travel to Tokyo to visit their grown children who, basically, don’t really have time for them. Their daughter-in-law makes more time for them than anyone else. On the way home, the elderly mother gets sick. Does that change anything for this family? You will have to see this movie to get the whole story. A realistic and gentle kind of story, this Japanese movie is touching and certainly one to watch.
5. Akira (1988)
Our list of top 5 Japanese movies to see would not be complete without a sample of anime. Akira is touted for its amazing animation, its brilliant use of light and color to make the screen come alive. In this story, teenage biker gangs roam the streets, fighting against the release of prisoner Akira, whose destructive psychic powers wreaked havoc on the city of Tokyo years before. There is lots of fighting and action in this movie. With the animation, this is one the whole family will enjoy.

Seven Samurai is my favorite. It's indeed the best Japanese movie ever.
I was hoping for movies that weren't entry level Japanese cinema. Sigh.
