Live Action "Akira" Film Revival in Talks, Report Says

It's been more than a year since the live action adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's classic cyberpunk manga anime, Akira was stalled and considered too costly to be produced, but now, there have been reports that the plans will be revived!

According to entertainment site Variety, director Jaume Collet-Serra is in talks to revive the project. If all goes as planned, he would direct the adaptation in Spring 2014, after he finishes the Run All Night film. Collet-Serra was the director of films Non-Stop, Unknown, and House of Wax.

If the live-action film project is revived, original Akira manga creator and anime director Katsuhiro Otomo will be overseeing the project as an executive producer, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson Killoran with Appian Way, and Mad Chance's Andrew Lazar as producers.

The Akira live action movie adaptation is set in New Manhattan, the cyberpunk sci-fi epic follows the leader of a biker gang who must save his friend, discovered with potentially destructive psychokinetic abilities, from government medical experiments.
