TOEI Japan Channel to Bring Kamen Rider, Super Sentai to the US

TOEI, the makers of our favorite tokusatsu series such as Kamen Rider and Super Sentai, will be bringing them to the U.S. this month via a paid channel to be known as TOEI Japan Channel. Along with other yakuza shows, it will be broadcasted via the Internet (IPTV).

Their primary target audience are more than four hundred thousand Japanese who currently reside in the United States. And after a year, they do plan of adding English subtitles on their television programs. More programs and movies are to be expected once the project kick-starts.

Toei decided to launch the channel as a response to interest in the "Cool Japan" initiative, a program supported by the Japanese government and various companies to promote modern Japanese culture such as anime and manga abroad.

Yasuhiko Nakashima of Toei's International Sales division said, “Because of the current interest in 'Cool Japan' we saw an opportunity to show off our tokusatsu hero shows. In the future we'd like even provide the series almost as they air in Japan.

And in the US, all the fanboys are screeching and hollering in joy.

my main issues with this are:

you gotta pay for it, makes me sadface as a cheap-o

    and... America only.
what about the rest of the everywhere else?

  6. Just for US? Are they planning to widening their channel to another country like south east asian too? If they do, i will really satisfy with toei.. Anyway, good job toei

I'm excited about this news but skeptical as well, because guess what... this only mean one thing: Tokusatsu fansubbers (TV-Nihon or Over-Time, or others whichever you prefer) are going to be put into retirement, because by the time the shows are released officially (with paid subscription) the fansubbers' works will be regarded as 'completely' illegal (it's not now, considering it's free-sub). I hope everyone will remember this crucial fact...

  8. Anonymous Says:

you guys are missing the point. once they do this, if a subbing site doesn't have thier permission to b putting up their shows, the site is either going to b forced to come down and/or legal action will be taken against them. meaning if you're not paying for ur favorite show, ur not watching it AT ALL. I've wtinessed this w/ dramacrazy.net and my favorite j-dramas and k-dramas. but do keep in mind it is their property.

  9. Anonymous Says:

So will TVN abd OT still put out subs even though we will have "official" onea?

  10. Anonymous Says:

Why would fansubbers have to stop subbing Kamen Rider and Super Sentai? Nothing is changing it's a Toei internet TV channel, meaning it'll be hosted in Japan and just be IP locked to those outside of the US. The only way it would be "completely" illegal is if a company in the US bought the US license. It'd be different if a company like Funimation bought the rights, but they haven't. Toei still owns the rights.

  11. Unknown Says:

But it will start first in japanese and they will add the subs "later" (2-3 years?). The cool thing is that people who doesn't understand japanese will get an official and accurate translation of the shows once they get subbed by TOEI, without any spiced-up script or something like "Hear Our Roar". LOL

Will this Toei Japan channel be available via Direct tv, dish network or time warner cable??? Because those are the major tv providers in America. I doubt any of these providers will pick up the channel. It's gonna be expensive to order this channel. And considering how you can just watch it free online, it's not gonna be worth it. But still pretty cool.

  13. Unknown Says:

I hope the chanel to come to México too u.u

  14. Anonymous Says:

maybe one day "TOEI America" because it's not only Japanese Americans that love sentai, listen up TOEI, you have a huge audience worldwide

  15. Anonymous Says:

To the Anon who said it would be IP blocked outside Japan: Did you even read this? It says explicitly that it's aimed at Japanese expats living in the United States.

  16. Come to Brazil TOEI Channel pleasyyyy!!!!!

Did you not read the article? TOEI is bringing the IPTV channel to the US. They're not blocking US connections...

  19. Xenotome Says:

Fansubs are illegal already, but are something Toei turns a blind eye to because there was no other way for Sentai & Rider to be streamed in the US. Once they do this and start getting money from the show from those in the US they DO have a reason to pull the illegality on fansubs for giving away their shows for free.

  20. Anonymous Says:

    Woot woot!

Although this may be the end of TV-Nihon and all... But yeah.

Hopefully it's streaming when you want, not at a specific time.

  21. GoseiInfinity Says:

Tv-Nihon will always be our final hope for free fan-subs.

  22. here's the official statement JEFusion left out for some reason.
Kamen Rider & "Cool Japan:" Toei starts U.S. pay channel

Toei, known for such hit movies and series such as "Kamen Rider" and "Gokudou no Onna-tachi," began a pay channel in the U.S. this month. They hope to draw attention from "Cool Japan" cartoons and comics, as well as tokusatsu hero and yakusa works.

Known as the "Toei Japan Channel," it will broadcast television programs and movies made Toei via the Internet (IPTV).

At first, the target audience is the approximately four hundred thousand Japanese people in the United States, and after one year Toei plans to add English subtitles. Once their character and hero shows have taken a foothold, they expect to advance into the American market with various movies and television programming.

This time especially they would like to promote the suited heroes that fight evil that have become a part of Japanese culture. Toei is known for the "Kamen Rider" series, which first went on the air in 1971, and the "Super Sentai" series, which began with "Himitsu Sentai Goranger" in 1975 and have continued since. Yasuhiko Nakashima of Toei's International Sales division said, "Because of the current interest in 'Cool Japan' we saw an opportunity to show off our tokusatsu hero shows. In the future we'd like even provide the series almost as they air in Japan."

Here's what TV Nihon has to say about it.
Dunno. Honestly the subtitles seems like a bit of a pipe dream and who knows if this channel will actually take off. We'll see when we get there I guess?- Lunagel

When they say "subtitles", I'm honestly thinking they're referring more to the dramas and movies, not actually KR and SS.-Lunagel

I don't think there's anything to worry about. I pretty much instantly dismissed this news as soon as I heard the details for it.-takenoko

Well, the whole reason why they haven't launched KR and SS in the states before is because it's just too small of a target demographic to justify the costs. Broadcasting shows they already own? Barely any extra cost. Translating shows? Now if you do that right, it's a huge chunk of budget. If you don't do it right... you get HK subs.

I just don't think the potential fanbase is large enough to justify the costs. And honestly, the fans have been hugely spoiled with the quality of subtitles from all the tokusatsu fansubbers out there, so I really don't think they'll be willing to give up a beautiful free fansub to pay for a crap pay licensed version - Lunagel

If this ends up affecting the ST market it won't be anytime soon.

Maybe you should re-read what I typed. I said IP blocked to those who live outside of the US not Japan. I don't mean to sound like an ass, but it's not that hard to understand what I wrote earlier.

Now SABAN will now have a run for his money. i think SABAN will now stop making any franchise of any toku shows. To be honest i really hate all the toku show that he brought to US for a lot of reasons: 1. The character and story have been change especially on the MMPR (Zyuranger) where ha made the white ranger as the 7th member after the green. We all know for a fact that he is a part of the DAIRANGER era. There are still a lot of reasons why but it would take me a lot of time to post it all, but to all original toku lovers you know what i mean. Chiao!

  25. Anonymous Says:

Thank God. hopefully this will put Power Rangers out of it's misery. Encourage kids to read more because of the subs.....

  26. Anonymous Says:

Hoping for this and maybe releases of the original series on dvd. I know I get odd looks when talk the original when seeing the PR dvds. Specially backwards Kakuranger.

Thats my big wish US released Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, and the other live action heroes. Starting with Goranger with sentai and Kamen Rider v. 1
    Saban can rot.
