Actors Teppei Koike and Haruma Miura are cast to be on the Japanese stage production of the popular Broadway musical "Kinky Boots". Last 2013, the said musical was nominated for 13 categories at the Tony Awards(the Academy Award for theater) and won in 6 of these nominations. This will be the first time Koike & Miura are tagged together.
Charlie(Koike), an heir to an old shoe factory which fell into financial turmoil, meets Laura/Lola(Miura) a drag queen, throwing away discrimination or prejudice, the story paints the rebirth of a drag queen in a boots factory. A British film of the musical was also released in 2005.
The Japan version of the musical is directed and choreographed by Jerry Mitchell. Actor, Goro Kishitani will assist in directing the musical as well as provide its screenplay with music from US singer Cyndi Lauper. The original choreography was recreated by Rusty Mowery and original direction was recreated by D.B. Bonds.
Miura, challenged being in a female role, mentions how fired up he was with the project. He was able to visit the US and got vocal lessons as well as an advice for his role by none other than Cyndi Lauper herself.
This production's scheduled performance is from July 21 to August 6 at the Tokyo New National Theater and from August 13 to August 22 at the Osaka Orix Theater. The Japan Tour of the Broadway Version of Kinky Boots will be at Tokyo Theater Orb in Shibuya this October.
