GaoYellow... Behind the Silver Screen

Horie Kei is best known in his role Washio Gaku a.k.a. GaoYellow in the 2001 Super Sentai Series, Hyakujuu Sentai GaoRanger but who would ever imagined that he can soar higher than that?

This "Noble Eagle" soars high as he continue to sojourn the entertainment scene. He started acting back in 1999 in the kaijuu film "Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris" which happened to be his stepping stone to a larger world. After that, he then took a bigger part of a cast in "Hyakujuu Sentai GaoRanger" in 2001 wherein we knew him better. As recorded in the Internet Movie Data Base and other related sites, he took part in 11 movies and 4 TV series including the two mentioned above.

While spending his time in saving the world, he directed his first movie, "Suicide: Glowing, Growing" in 2001 that won two international awards: the Dragons and Tigers Award (Special Mention) at the Vancouver International Film Festival (2001) and the Prize of Ecumenical Jury (Special Mention) for his radical analysis on the sensitive subject about suicides committed by young people at the Mannheim-Heidelberg International Film Festival (2002).

Alongside with this, he was also recorded as director of 15 more titles varying from movies and TV series including "Itsuka no Kimi e," a BL movie and "Delicious Gakuin" featuring tokusatsu actors Aiba Hiroki (Shinkenger), Nakamura Yuichi (Kamen Rider Hibiki, Den-O) and Miura Ryosuke (Kamen Rider OOO) for TV series. Just last February 16th, the film "Ku no Kyoukai" was shown in theatres under his name with Inoue Masahiro (Kamen Rider Decade) as one of the main cast.

Horie's flight didn't just end up in acting and directing for 9 of those he directed including 4 other movies were written by him. And he also produced 5 out of those he directed with 2 others titles.

Going over to the titles and synopsis, the common concept of his works were about drama, mystery and suspense.

GaoYellow is not really my favorite GaoRanger but as a part of my system, I always look into every cast's other projects and Yellow's actor Horie Kei got my interest. It is something that I never wonder. In all honesty, had just finished watching Hyakujuu Sentai GaoRanger yesterday and it is the third sentai series that I finished above Gekiranger.

In all honesty, Gaoranger was pretty unremarkable to me. Though it's good to know GaoYellow is doing so well

yeah but at the time gaoranger was out of this word in 2001

the later second half of the show was quite unremarkable.

  4. Thank you so much for posting this. Gao Yellow is one of my favorite Gaorangers, and Kei Horie is amazing.

He's probably one of my favorite sentai actors, because he writes and directs. He was actually doing this before Gaoranger. He studied film in college.

I think I might watch some of his movies.

oh wow, he's led quite a productive career. im amazed he's done as much work as he has.

he's stayed productive after his 25th anniversary team left the air all of those years back.
