"Space Pirate Captain Harlock" Debuts at #2 of Japan Box Office

Even with the legendary ship Arcadia, Space Pirate Captain Harlock only manages to grab Japan Box Office Weekend's second spot. Hayao Miyazaki's, who recently announced his retirement, The Wind Rises still leads for the eighth straight week!

According to Box Office Mojo, the computer-generated film earns 133,929,210 yen (US$ 21,890,595) on its debut weekend, from 231 screens.

Written by Leiji Matsumoto back in 1977-79, it tells the story of the titular Captain Harlock, who rebels against Earth's inept government and fights for humanity with his crew of 40 aboard the invincible space battleship Arcadia. The movie features the voices of Shun Oguri and Haruma Miura, as Captain Harlock and the assassin Yama, a film-only character, respectively.

Space Pirate Captain Harlock is directed by Shinji Aramaki (Appleseed) with scripts from Harutoshi Fukui (Mobile Suit Gundam UC).
