Doraemon Gets 1st CGI Film to Premiere this Summer 2014

Starring in his first 3D computer generated film this Summer of 2014 is the iconic robot cat from the future, Doraemon. To be entitled Stand By Me Doraemon, the film will celebrate what would have been the 80th birthday of late co-creator Fujiko F. Fujio (Hiroshi Fujimoto).

Helming the film are Takashi Yamazaki (Always: Sunset on Third Street, Space Battleship Yamato) and Ryƻichi Yagi (Moyashimon 3D CG director), who both worked on Japan's first feature-length 3D CG anime film, Friends: Mononoke Shima no Naki, three years ago.

Planning on Stand By Me Doraemon began three years ago. After their previous film the two directors wanted to do another project comprised of the same team. According to Yamazaki, the film lets one experience in 3D what it would be like to use Doraemon's gadgets. Meanwhile, Yagi added that one should not miss the scenes involving Doraemon's signature Take-Copter (Bamboo-Copters).

Character modeling took over a year to make it realistic. And instead of the usual animation to voice recording, the film did the dialogues first and then the staff produced the CG animation to match the voices. The film also used miniatures and real objects for the background images.

Originally released in 1968 by manga author duo Fujiko Fujio (Hiroshi Fujimoto and Motoo Abiko), Doraemon follows the story of the robotic cat that came from the future and sent to the present time to help the boy's hapless grandfather, Nobita. Doraemon and Nobita, along with Shizuka, Soneo and Gian, they deal with everyday childhood issues, with the help of the gadgets in Doraemon's fourth-dimensional pocket.
