Live Action "Lupin III" Film to Feature Modernized Characters

Writer Take Yoshida reveals in an interview that director Ryuhei Kitamura intends to change the setting of the upcoming live action film adaptation of the classic Monkey Punch manga and anime Lupin III, and plans to go on a "modernized" route. Yoshida is a friend of director Kitamura.

In the interview, Yoshida stated:
There's no meaning to a live-action film adaptation if you make the setting the same. I intend to change the characters themselves to make them modern. It would be nonsense for Goemon to exist in current society wearing samurai's garb and carrying around a katana.
Included in the main cast are Meisa Kuroki (Space Battleship Yamato, Crows Zero II) as Fujiko Mine, Tetsuji Tamayama (NANA, Casshern) as Daisuke Jigen, Gou Ayano (Rurouni Kenshin) as Goemon Ishikawa, and Tadanobu Asano (47 Ronin) as Detective Kōichi Zenigata.

Apart from having an original story, the live action Lupin III film will feature how the main characters met and form the team that we know now. The film is scheduled for Summer 2014 release.

  1. I have a BAAAAAAD feeling about this...

  2. I think as long as the elements of what LUPIN III became epic, the movie would be ok. I mean, its ok to set the movie in the modern world similar on how the radioactive spider that bitten P. Parker (note that radioactive was a breakthrough technology that time) into a genetically altered spider (since genetics and DNA are the technology today). I hope this live adaptation would go well..

Remember the last time we changed the Lupin formula? Yeah, Fujiko turned into the biggest slut anime had ever known. No humor, no fun and generally a terrible show. Now here we're doing it again. Goemon a samurai is nonsense you say? Um...... everyone? What's the reason we all love Lupin III? Is it that realistic world famous suit that doesn't get caught by the eyes of everyone in the world? Is it that realistic second that fires all the bullets out of Jiggen's gun to all the baddies at just the right moment? Is it those realistic mountains on Fujiko's chest? Is it those practical handcuffs that can arrest someone 30 feet away from you? Is it the realistic CLOUD/MOON/ROBOT DRAGON CUTTING SWORD OF BADASSDOM!!!!!!! Really? I thought so. I reserve my judgement on this movie till it's released but I do have 0% expectations for it. Only way to go from here is up. Impress me oh mighty modern director. Make. My. Walter P38.
