AKB48's Kojima Haruna Breaks the Record by Topping Oricon's Weekly Book Ranking

As announced on the 9th of January, AKB48's Kojima Haruna got the top spot on Oricon's weekly book ranking with her first solo photobook entitled, "Kojiharu."

On it's first week, "Kojiharu" sold 61,000 copies which made it generally took the first place in the weekly book ranking for both photobooks and mooks. In fact, it broke the record of "Sashiko" from fellow member, Sashihara Rino by 4,000 copies becoming the highest selling female solo photobook in history.

The photobook itself consists several beautiful and daring photos of Kojima and includes a long interview. According to the publisher, one reason for Kojima's success in her photobook is that she has lots of female fans and based on data, more than half of her sales were purchased by women. And yet, surprised as she was, Kojima's delighted that she took the top spot in the Oricon ranking.

Though recorded as number one, it's rare for a photobook to top the general ranking for books, besides, it's just the second time. Former AKB48 member Maeda Atsuko was the first person to top Oricon's weekly book ranking with her photobook back in 2012.

If the high sales would be maintained, "Kojiharu" has the chance to become a best-seller just like the release of Miyazawa Rie's nude photobook in 1991 which sold over 1,500,000 copies.
