Throwback Post - Sentai Henshin Devices: Then Till Now

Sentai henshin devices... either you love them or you hate them. From rings to braces and phones, it has been an important part of our favorite Super Sentai and/or power rangers series for without these(with the exception of Goranger to Battle Fever J), they can't transform in their respective ranger forms. To some toy collectors, some will standout in their collection and some, well, are so painful in the eyes and sometimes, wallet draining, but chances are, they will still buy them for the love of the fandom. So let's take a little time jump(because it's Thursday) and head back to where it all started and know your sentai device type...

"In brightest day and blackest night, no evil shall.. wait, wrong show!!"

The Denziring - The very 1st super sentai henshin device as seen and used in Denshi Sentai Denjiman. A sentai device that the team can wear casually just like the Dino Buckler (Kyoryu Sentai Zyuranger) pictured down below.

"It's Morphin' Time!"

Casual worn sentai devices like it was a part of the team's everyday work/civi clothes were so unique that this trend was never repeated again in Sentai History. Unless, PLEX will have another brainstorming about that.

"Chrono Changer!"

The Brace Type - Every sentai fan's favorite. The brace era began in Taiyou Sentai Sunvulcan (which also works like The Flash's ring where his costume shoots out from the ring). In toy form, some of these braces came with built in games(check out some reviews in Youtube) like the Chrono Changer's (Mirai Sentai Timeranger) clock game or the Gogobrace's (KyuKyu Sentai GogoV) rescue and racing games.

"Choriki Henshin!"

The Dual Braces - Yet another fan favorite. This type of henshin devices was first seen in Chojuu Sentai Liveman and are usually 2 piece devices that sometimes work when the 2 are combined together. Other 2 piece devices don't need to interlock to work just like the Cross Changer (Chojin Sentai Jetman). This type of sentai devices was last seen in Choriki Sentai Ohranger. And if some fan will tell me something like "But the Gekichanger is a dual brace henshin device", I'll say nope. That one is molded after those gloves that MMA practitioners use.

"Gimme your number and i'll call you maybe."

The Cellular Phone - Denji Sentai Megaranger paved the way for celphone changers when the series introduced the Keitizer(Celchanger), which Yusaku Hayakawa uses to transform into Megasilver. Celchangers were last seen in Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger but will later return after Resha Sentai ToQger's 6th ranger emerges.

"By the power of Grayskull!!"

The Weapon Type - 1st seen in Seiju Sentai Gingaman (sorry geki fans, the Saiblade is not the 1st weapon type changer). Hyuuga raises the Bull Riot Sword to transform into the Black Knight just like Prince Adam transforming into He-Man. Weapon type changers was seen again in Jyuken Sentai Gekiranger in the form of Saiblade, Tokumei Sentai Go-Buster's Morphin' Blaster and lastly, Juuden Sentai Kyoryuger's Gaburevolver and Gabuchanger.

And lastly, who couldn't forget America's original henshin/morpher devices like the Solar Morpher from Power Rangers Jungle Fury and a morpher that some collectors are having a hard time obtaining, the Titanium Morpher from Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue!

"This month's RayBan summer collection..."

"Titanium Power!"

Well, that's all the sentai knowledge that i have shared for you guys and gals. I hope that this will enrich your sentai knowledge when it comes to sentai henshin devices. Until next throwback Thursday, this is the Gaiatron bidding you adieu.

Awesome little article! Proud to be one of the few who can say I own them all (minus that elusive Denziring). Some have said it's been up for sale in the past years, but I have yet to see that for myself. Some collect mecha, others prefer figures, but I've always held the changer as the principle item. It took me about 6 years to acquire them all, and although some older ones aren't in the best condition, they're complete with original boxes and all. The Applichanger has been a decade in the making, literally...can't wait to see how it turns out. To another 38 years!

"America's very 1st and only original henshin/morpher device"? Someone seems to be forgetting the Jungle Fury Solar Morphers.

"This type of sentai devices was last seen in Choriki Sentai Ohranger."

Uh, what about the dual braces used for the Magna Defender in Lost Galaxy? Yeah it ain't sentai, but seeing as the titanium ranger's device was mentioned I figured Power Rangers would count as well

Also, love how there was no mention of "sunglasses morphers" huehuehue Jungle Fury

  6. Steven Says:

Don't forget the poorly received Jungle Fury Sunglasses Morphers.

JAKQ technically had to use machines to turn into their cyborg forms.

  8. You say that the Titanium Morpher is the only Original American Morpher. What about the Solar Morphers from Jungle Fury?

  9. post updated and thanks for the reminder about the solar morpher, everyone! and yes, the power brace was the last dual brace and the magna defender came from dairanger's aura changer.

  10. the henshin devices like seen in kakuranger, dekaranger enter in the
    casual wearing category?

    @Anon #2:

Yes, the Magirangers' Magiphones are also cell phones, but they also work as magic wand as well, since their henshin devices have two features....
    1. Cell Phone mode-whenever they can communicate with each other

    2. Wand mode-whenever they use magic spells on their enemies.
