Famous Filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki Retires from Feature Films

NHK reports that world renowned animated filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki will be retiring from making full feature films. His most recent, The Wind Rises tops Japan Box Office Weekend for six consecutive weeks, earning 8.1 billion yen since it opened last August 24th!

The announcement was made by Studio Ghibli President Koji Hoshino during a press conference at Italy's Venice Film Festival. The Wind Rises was nominated in the film festival's competitive program.

Previous works by Miyazaki includes Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979), Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986), My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Kiki's Delivery Service (1989), Ponyo (2008), Princess Mononoke (1997), and Spirited Away (2001). The latter film is the highest earning film ever at the Japanese box office for 12 years, and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Film in 2003.
