SPD Green Ranger Comments on Power Rangers Super Megaforce Cameos

In the excerpt of Karan Ashley's podcast, Matt Austin, also known as Bridge / SPD Green Ranger, posted a comment on how Saban handled the possible cameos of the previous rangers in the upcoming episodes of Power Rangers Super Megaforce. Knowing that most of the Disney actors never received an email, including him, here's what he had to say:
First. I don't know what email Saban sent out. As far as I know - nobody in Disney era cast received a letter. Second. I totally get Karan. PR is one of the most top rated kids series in the world - the actors get paid peanuts to do it relative to any other show on television that doesn't play in every foreign market on earth. I actually make more at my current joe job per hour than they ever paid. They make tons of money off of licensing and merchandise, that doesn't trickle down to the actor.
To ask cast (except me apparently) to go down to NZ, essentially for free when you subtract food/airfare/hotel and the time away from responsibilities at home - is a LOSS. This is one of the major reasons why you started to have a rotating cast. So there aren't any contract negotiations. You have the cast. You milk them and then you cut them off. It's one of the reasons SPD/Mystic Force didn't have a team up. Wish it were different. I love the show and I love the fans. #Buttery

Last thing I'll say on this & you may Tumblr away at will. Saban probably doesn't even know who Bridge is, let alone who I am...and they will most likely never hire me as an actor or filmmaker. What has Saban done for you? You guys shat on Disney when they took over the franchise. Sure Disney might have messed up PR continuity, but they cared about the stories they were telling and the people involved. Say what you will, but this is the company we should be saluting for bring us more Star Wars.

Power Rangers Super Megaforce is the 21st season of Power Rangers continuing the celebration of the series 20th anniversary. Based on the previous information, everything related to Goseiger will be spread into 20 episode first season. The Megaforce rangers, will acquire a new "power up" in Super Megaforce and must be in this "new power-up" (Gokaiger suit) to transform into past rangers... This will also feature the appearance of the "historical rangers".

"I can fell there hatred for Saban flowing through me".

This is turning out to be one of the worst ill conceived, i'll planned, ill executed Anniversary I have ever seen. Matt has every right to be pissed. He did a lot for the franchise over the years and not even a god damn courtesy call. I don't want to hear anything about budget constraints. I said it once and I'll say it again. If they couldn't foresee any budget issue in making a proper anniversary season and they had years to plan properly. Then they deserve to fail. Utterly pathetic!!!!

    the question is.

How much matt get payed by Disney To diss Saban?

oh yeah, I with the Saban Side

  3. Anonymous Says:

Well....sounds like Saban is really dissing the cast members from the Disney-era ranger shows big time.

    Oh well, two possibilities...

either re-write the Disney-era Power Ranger seasons, or end Power Rangers with Super Megaforce and work on adapting Kamen Rider.

If he's pissed off about this then he's gonna lose it when he finds out how Super Hero Taisen "shat" on SPD/Dekaranger (among other Super Sentai and Kamen Riders).

But seriously, he does make a good point. Looking forward to Disney's Star Wars

If hardly any Disney actors have been called in (We know Jungle Fury is accounted for from the set pics of JF Red) Then exactly what on earth are they going to do with the new power-ups? Just use extras in suits? No-one will want that.

SPD, Mystic Force, Wild Force (technically), Ninja Storm and RPM are 5/6 power ups the main robot gets over the course of the series. (Samurai being the other one) JF is one power that is used once for their focus ep and not seen again IIRC. :/

So idk, looks like Saban productions is shooting themselves in the foot with this whole thing.

  7. marty Says:

So what are we gonna do now make protest to saban in this year's power morphicon to increase work salaries, better facilities for the casts and crew and cancel budget restrictions or cancel the show to make super megaforce as final season.

  8. "Well....sounds like Saban is really dissing the cast members from the Disney-era ranger shows big time."

I remember around the time Megaforce was being teased, someone at Saban made comments about how as far as they were concerned, the Disney seasons never happened. I guess we know what that means now.

I was asking myself the other day which company handled Power Rangers better? Saban or Disney.

A lot of people like to say Saban due to the fact that they started the franchise and often like to look at MMPR with tinted glasses, but honestly just because it was the first doesn't make it the best especially taken into consideration how terrible the directing and editing was in the first 2 seasons but lets take a look a the seasons they produced overall.

First of all both companies have a massive flop of a season under their belts: Saban has Turbo and Disney had Operation Overdrive, but they each has a fair share of massive hit seasons

Saban had: In Space and Time Force, also arguably Lost Galaxy
Disney had: Dino Thunder, RPM and arguably SPD

On the flip side though, In Space had 5 previous seasons of lore to back it up and Time Force is considered a copy of Timeranger which translated well for American audiences, however since reacquiring the series Saban has been rather lazy with it, first off making Shinkenger which needed A LOT of Japanese knowledge to begin with into a tamed story for western kids was terrible in execution, and whilst they're at least are trying new things in megaforce it seems the show runners are hanging onto elements from Samurai too much that they can't let it go. And in all honesty Samurai and Super Samurai felt like seasons written by marketing businessmen rather than talented writers.

On the other hand with Disney there is one name that fans tend to lothe: "Bruce Kalish" SPD was a great season, yes it did utilise elements from the Sentai but at least they kept enough of the seasons fresh to make them enjoyable, it also didn't help that the censorship meddling resulted in the dreaded "kalishsplosions", but a big highlight they've got under their belt is that they were sucsesfully able to negotiate with Jason David Frank, a Saban era ranger to come back for an entire season ... AND deliver a quality season that does more than just rely on his presence. And RPM is a prime example of Power Ranger originality and directing done perfectly, Jungle fury was a pretty good season but it's constantly overshadowed because of the even better season and the terrible season before it, but it shows that Disney were starting to get better at making Power Rangers before it was canned. AND many more of their actors especially from Mystic Force, Jungle Fury and RPM have gone on to make very successful careers

Hate to say it guys but Matt is right, the series was better under Disney's control than Saban's

  10. Anonymous Says:

You've got to be kidding me. I though Saban would have handled the returning cast better. This is ridiculous!
As much as I hate to say it, Matt has a point about Disney caring about the actors more than Saban did.

  11. Anonymous Says:

Ugh, I thought that Saban would have some more respect for the actors by now. I know Saban doesn't like the Disney seasons but I thought they at least checked it out and show respect for the Disney seasons.
As much as I hate to admit: Matt does have a point, Disney does treat their actors better than Saban.
I hope that Saban will change their ways before it is too late.

  13. Brandon Says:

Wasn't Casey Rhodes, Jungle Fury Red Ranger appearing in Super Megaforce? Cause he's the actor that played him is like the only one so far right?

  14. Anonymous Says:

Didn't one of the producers want or writers or one of the people in Saban wanted to make the Disney era seasons not the same continuity as the Saban era seasons? Maybe they influence the staff to recruit as little Disney era rangers as possible?

  15. Anonymous Says:

matt is right, he has plenty of good points. we only need a best of course of action from here. and that begins with firing tzachor and every other moron or keeping competent people that worked in saban era 1.

matt did a lot, the disney era actors did a lot to contribute openly to this franchise that's 20 years old that was created august 28th 1993.

i don't blame matt for being angry, everything he has said is right and is a reflection of the work ethic of the power ranger division of saban brands.

i know the disney seasons did happen because its writing staff made it happen and made it possible, matt says they had great storytelling. i stand by matt austin as he's right on as to what it has become.

  16. Anonymous Says:

I think disney era actors were contacted, of course.

What I think happened with SPD was that
the season had actors living in NZ or Australia. In this case Why bothering contacting the rest? SPD has John Thui AND Michelle. And also who played Sam and NovaRanger.

It will be much cheaper for them to hire these guys, instead of bringing someone from the US or Canada.

  21. Anonymous Says:

    @Brandon

Yes. Saban confirmed that Casey will be returning for the next season.

But anyways, Matt does have a point though. Even though I'm gonna regret ever saying this, Power Rangers was actually doing better under its' control before it got canned after MF and OO.

Super Mega Farce is gonna suck so hard. I just saw the latest promo. They still haven't taught "the model" how to act let alone deliver a simple line. This is the guy who is expected to be Captain Marvelous during the fight footage? Why the fuck is Tzachor still making decisions over there. Oh yeah that's right. He's Saban Butt Boy. Saban fucking him while Tzachor is screwing over 20 years of loyal, patient and dedicated fans who demand excellence from there show. They have been filming for months now and only 9 veterans are confirmed. Jason Faunt and JDF are the only good choices. The rest of them feels more like the replacements. B string veterans that no one cares about. The only reason why certain Disney era cast members was ask to come back was because some of them happen to still live in New Zealand. None of the Mystic Force guys, nor Dino Thunder, nor Ninja Storm, nor RPM are going as far as we know. I'm so sick of those suits over at Saban Brands. Bullshit hack writers and production team. Fuck it I'm done........

  23. Anonymous Says:

Okay, enough about getting the show cancelled, that's not going to fix the problem. Quit trying to end the series just because you prefer sentai, it's pretty damn obvious that that's your motive behind just cancelling it.

Why don't we start an online petition demanding saban company to pay the cast and crew better, properly pay all those who are coming back better? And demand they extend the megaforce series into three seasons so they can properly tell a story rather than rushing through two-fifty episode seasons worth of sentai footage into only forty episodes. An extension might give us a lot of filler episodes, but at least we won't have a season that's nothing but cameo after cameo of actors, plus it gives us more time for character developement. Anyway, whoever can make the petition and post it all over ranger boards and anywhere relevant I would definitely sign it.

I really agree Matt, it sucks that saban is more money hungry than disney, which is surprising on so many levels.
Though I don't think either company did a better job with the series, they both did their best interpreting a series from japan the requires a lot of editiing but more often than not, they did an alright job.
However, they really need to treat their actors better.

  24. Anonymous Says:

    This is... TUMBLING down!
    Hahahaha!

Someone tell me story of the old country.

I mean,of RPM. I wanna know what makes it awesome before I devote my free time to watching it.

Just saying, if you were a popular brain surgeon and you took a decade off for some reason(maybe you got cancer, I don't know it's unimportant) and then returned to the field, you're not going to have the same finesse you did when you were at your peak. It's gonna take time to re-learn the things that made you pro.

I love Saban and Disney for different reasons, but Power Rangers is a different subject when I compare the two. MMPR is by no means the best season - I'd argue it isn't even a good season - but by the time they had come full circle, Saban and his writing team had formulated a good way to write Power Rangers. But when his pride and joy was ripped out of his hands until 2011, he was probably pretty mad - I know I would be - and when he returned, he was a little rusty.

They say it takes 10,000 hours to get good at something. I have faith that Saban will get back into good spirits and return to his prime, after he takes his sweet time re-learning the ropes.

  27. Anonymous Says:

Well this is a very interesting article. Power ranger actors telling us some inside stories of the backstage drama with Saban. If they get such a low pay check I definitely see why they turn it down. If I was a pr actor and I had to go to new zealand to film and I had to pay for my own travel expenses and food. I wouldn't go. It's understandable for these guys to turn it down.

This just goes to show that saban may very well be living up to his jewish stereotypes. It must be really low pay for these many actors to turn down the anniversary team up. I feel bad more us the fans. This anniversary is something that pr fans were dreaming to see. But it's not going to happen. Such a shame. Come on Saban makes things right for the actors and the fans.

  28. Anonymous Says:

Matt sure threw some poop on the fan. Torin would be proud of him for being so brave. XD

I think Saban is begining to pay for the "lack of care" with their own people. Mark my words: Saban will not be the only one. Lots of entertainment enterprises will pay for attitudes like this. Life may be hard but this is no excuse to turn employees into slaves. "Justice is delayed, but it not fails"...

Erm... Well, that's a bit exaggerated, I know. But you know what I mean. I hope...

  29. Anonymous Says:

This is sad that Super Megaforce is will turn out a flop with what Saban and his crew are doing with the PR alumni because he just doesn't want to shelve out money.

And from the perspective of another former PR actor in Matt Ausin, it just drives the point that Saban is screwing up a successful franchise he brought to the US, picked up by Disney's Ranger Productions, andburying it again he brought the franchise back.

Is this the last time we will see Power Rangers? Let's hope not.

  30. Anonymous Says:

what characters in the past didn't appear, then kamen rider decade might be us...the possibility is there; Saban should pay more the the veteran as if they really make a comeback, they will earn more as well...it's all about scarification

When Matt says "As far as I know - nobody in Disney era cast received a letter" he means no Disney cast member that isn't Australian or a Kiwi got an email.

  32. Anonymous Says:

What makes RPM Superficially awesome is the dark story(Post apocalyptic world), The character developement, and the humor it had mocking the series and power rangers as a whole.
The non-superficial part is the fact that it was really epic and dark even though it's sentai counterpart was bright, humorous, and rediculous. Oh and that it was third time the season was going to "end" right after wild force and in space. So, for it to really be good, you have to take in the fact that this season would of put a close to all the spandex and megazord fight scenes.

out of curiosity, just how many Sentai cast members returned for gokaiger? their was a great deal but i think it was far from a full cast.

I recall akaranger, big 1, yellow lion, spd red, shinken red (female), turbo red, abare killer, go-on yellow, gogo v pink, black condor, bio red one, mammoth ranger, ohred, ohpink, ginga red, black knight, red racer, ryuuranger, magired, go-on silver, go-on red, abare blue, mega red, time yellow, deka yellow, deka pink, goggle black, vul eagle, dyna pink, geki red, gao red, bouken red, Denji blue/battle kenya(same actor), ninja white, magipink , hurricanger red blue and yellow, and all 6 goseigers.

i know they also use wolf warrior (i forget his sentai name), zubaan, signalman , bae, mere, doggie krueger and ninjaman but don't know if they're the same voices.

I'm sorry if i missed anyone. I think i might have missed a few of the faces that appeared in goseiger vs gokaiger.

Anyway, assuming all of the costume-only members retained their voices, that would make at least 51 different actors reprising roles out of over 199. It's an impressive cast but far from everyone.

Now, to be fair PR does not have that many cast members cause they don't have that many season. so let's remove everyone prior to ZYURANGER and dairanger.

That would leave 40 returning sentai members from the post PR era, assuming I didn't miss anyone.

Now, i think it's safe to assume that goseiger will be reprising. We know for sure that Wild Force Red (that should make the introduction of gao lion easy), jungle fury red, red and blue samurai are all in and jason david frank and the rest of samurai will likely be in.

so we already have 9 definite and 5 "likely".

in addition there are rumors that In Space's Red, turbo's blue, turbo green/in space black, time force red, and overdrive's red will appear.

If that is all true that puts another 5 so we are already at a potential 19 legends. considering that gokaiger had about 60 episode and 2 movies to put in all these legends and SMF will have maybe 22 episodes, i do not think that is bad at all.

  37. Anonymous Says:

whoops. i am an idiot. by thinking goseiger instead of megaforce i completely missed that it's THE SAME CAST.

    duh.

ok, so let's remove 5 from the post zyuranger count since goseiger/gokaiger is being used by one cast.

and let's remove 5 from my definite list.......since it's not a legends cast. i guess that means they won't use any of the teamup footage from goseiger vs gokaiger. not surprising considering there's no way to edit that battle and be coherent.

    PR legend recap:

    4 definitely returning.

    5 likely.

5 rumored yes's in addition to the 5 likely.

    so 14 total.

  38. Unknown Says:

In my honest opinion, Saban has screwed up, yes most of us are still blinded by the fact that Saban did bring PR into our lives but that's where it ends. Disney had 6 seasons and a messed up but good attempt at remastering MMPR, however when you look at the storylines and the nod to Sentai in DT, it was the better production. Out of the Saban Era, the greatest seasons were: In Space, MM (only because it was the first) and Time Force, but can you really say besides Justin and the original 3 seasons cast that any one character was memorable? Disney had characters like Matt Austin's Bridge who (even though I didn't go ga-ga for SPD) left me with the Buttery thing, The realistic Teenage behavior of the Dino Thunder cast, the X Games sport dynamics of the team of Ninja Storm, the outcast trying to do the right thing of Jack and Z against the good stable life of Bridge, Sky, And Syd of SPD, The long friendship and new guy feeling of Mystic Force, and the post apocalpyse nature of RPM, for example. All of Saban's shows seem to go along the lines of ridiculous and too goody goody that most kids aren't even into it. And considering how many fans are now losing interest, it seems we either have 3 choices: let it die, get some better production to take over, or all of the fans finally do the smart thing pool are extra money together and instead of buying merchandise, help make the Power Ranger series worth watching again, this would be a better option because we all seem to hate the current mess up of Saban, and in all honesty if we all just saved up money into a big pool for maybe 2 years (or less, if it becomes something like Veronica Mars) we'd have the best, shoot we'd probably make a better, more fanboy/fangirl pleasing anniversary season than Saban is horribly slacking off with.

  39. MLP Chikan Says:

Gonna laugh if some decent talent is actually pulled in for this season, or it does well enough for Power Rangers to continue. I love reading these angry fanboy comments! But sadly, since Gobuster would be next, and much of you bastards disliked it, I don't know how that will turn out- Who am I kidding. If it's Sentai, you guys will pick up your "katana" anyway. amirite? Desu.

  40. Anonymous Says:

Another thing to point out is that Saban has been hiring actors who can't act for crap. Bland faces, forced smiles, lack of emotion etc. It's like they're just reading out of a script which is displayed in front of them. Not saying all of them are like this but most of them are, Samurai is a prime example and has been very awkward to watch. Funny how some people were spewing hatred on Disney when everyone found out that Saban was buying back the rights from them despite Disney producing excellent seasons such as RPM. Both Saban and Disney have had their ups and downs and at the end of the day its only a kids show. But what Saban is doing right now by treating the actors like trash and has done in the past is totally unacceptable, enough is enough. This has definitely caught the attention of many veterans such as Matt. Its still not too late for Saban to make changes and repair the hole. Honestly, Power Rangers was safer in the hands of Disney.

  41. Anonymous Says:

You know what? After Samurai, Super Samurai, and Megaforce, I wish Disney had kept Power Rangers. Seriously, Saban has killed the franchise. Not only hat, he's also a total cheapskate.

  42. Anonymous Says:

And some people on this site thinks this is a huge troll by Saban.

  43. Anonymous Says:

I liked most of the shows up until Lost Galaxy, then I quit watching them because they were getting annoying to watch because of how dumb the monsters were. I have watched the Disney rangers on Nicktoons but I just do not like them as much as the Saban rangers, I am not sure why though, too me they're stories just have not been as much fun for me like Saban, but I Have seen Samurai and Megaforce but the only issue I have with them is too much Mighty Morphin influence but I cannot see anyway to change them since people would complain if Saban did stop using Mighty Morphin then they would think he was "betraying" the show that started Power Rangers.

  44. Unknown Says:

Saban better not ever kill off the entire Disney Era/seasons.
