Sashihara Rino, the winner of this year's elections
On June 17, 2017, AKB48 announced the final results of their annual General Elections. Out of 321 members from all 48-themed groups, 80 members have been chosen to participate in AKB48's upcoming 49th single, coming this August.
All 80 members have been divided into 5 groups of 16 members each, to perform songs for the said single:
1. Senbatsu (Selection) Members - 1st-16th place
2. Undergirls - 17th-32nd place
3. Next Girls - 33rd-48th place
4. Future Girls - 49th-64th place
5. Upcoming Girls - 65th-80th place
The Top 16 (Senbatsu) shall be performing the carrier single, with the 1st place winner becoming the center of the group. The Top 16 are as follows, along with their respective vote count:
1. Sashihara Rino - 246,376 votes
2. Watanabe Mayu - 149,132 votes
3. Matsui Jurina - 113,615 votes
4. Miyawaki Sakura - 82, 803 votes
5. Ogino Yuka - 72,368 votes
6. Suda Akari - 63,124 votes
7. Yokoyama Yui - 58,314 votes
8. Souda Sarina - 52,475 votes
9. Okada Nana - 48,143 votes
10. Kitahara Rie - 45,684 votes
11. Takahashi Juri - 42,663 votes
12. Shiroma Miru - 41,491 votes
13. Honma Hinata - 41,230 votes
14. Furuhata Nao - 40,202 votes
15. Takayanagi Akane - 38,576 votes
16. Yoshida Akari - 35,540 votes

Upon making her acceptance speech, Watanabe Mayu announced her graduation from AKB48. Known as Mayuyu to her fans, she debuted in December 2006, and has since become one of the most popular members of the group, and was even the winner of the 2014 General Elections. She is also currently an actress, and has released solo albums. Her departure from the group is yet to be announced.

While graduation announcements have become common in these kinds of events, Sutou Ririka shocked the entirety of Japan, by announcing her intentions to get married. Sutou, who took 20th place in the election, caused an uproar with her announcement, something that has happened for the first time in the history of AKB48, and all its sister groups, considering their so-called 'Love Ban' rule, which prohibits members from being involved in romantic relationships. However, she is yet to formally announce her graduation. Sutou Ririka is currently a member of NMB48, based in Namba, Osaka.

Yep that is Japan's "Number 1" idol group for you. All the past members who aspired it as a career choice have moved on with their lives and now they only left with girls who becomes a member because they think it's trendy or they're just plain stupid in school and the school of life. psssh. their other groups in Japan that deserves more and better attention than them.
