Why are Power Rangers Super Megaforce Ranger Keys Small?

A few weeks ago we reported about the appearance of the merchandise for the 21st season of Power Rangers, Power Rangers Super Megaforce at SDCC, and one of them is the "Legend Keys". RangerCrew reports its differences from the original Japanese release.

The one available at the San Diego Comic Con are the prototype of the soon to be released keys. It's smaller compared to the original Japanese release to cater its target audience, the kids. The keys are also spring loaded for show like functionality for the younger audience. The cost of the springs is balanced with the smaller figure. Additionally, the affordability of the keys to the kids and collectors alike are also taken into consideration.

Power Rangers Super Megaforce focuses on the Rangers' mission to defeat a massive alien army Armada that was sent to conquer Earth. To face this threat, Gosei, a supernatural guardian who has protected Earth for centuries, gives the Rangers special morphers and keys, which allow them to morph into Super Megaforce Rangers. The Rangers also have an added special ability to morph into any team of Power Rangers from the past. These super-sized adventures can only mean one thing: the all-new Power Rangers Super Megaforce has arrived!

Um... Children were still the target audience for Gokaiger. There's no excuse for something as silly as reducing the size of the keys. If anything, it makes them more of a hazard and harder to find when they get lost.

I welcome the changes, for one there's no need to manually flip the key and two, I don't want to fork out a crapload of money for the keys which has really put me off getting them from Japan.

Anon, have you seen the going rate of a SINGLE One Click Ranger Key? I swear retail on the things are like $10 USD per key, which is about half the price of a team pack. So, yeah, if the options were release the keys with the same scale as Japan did without the springs or shrink them and springload them, I'll take the small spring loaded ones any day.

  4. Anon1, you forget that Japan has different standards than America does. Japan cares more about show accuracy rather than something like spring loaded keys.

I don't have an issue with this and am happy to hear that the keys have spring-action like the show now. I'm glad American fans are getting something new instead of just Japan's surplus stock, and should they still want the original keys--it's available to them via a simple internet global shipping order.

they look bootleg and kinda funky its like their on steroids? thanks US & A

  7. Anonymous Says:

The main reason is to keep the costs down hence the "for kids" part. They want to make them cheaper than their sentai counterparts

  8. Anonymous Says:

They only do it to make more money, because we could get the idea of getting a mobirate, but the american keys, so they made them smaller and we need to buy the american-mobirate, so they get much more money.

  9. Anonymous Says:

Obviously they don't want to lose milking the money to the jap version where collectors can just import.

  10. Anonymous Says:

I agree with the Anon...I don't understand why couldn't they just redistribute the original ranger keys. It's not like Saban hasn't done that before. When I was little one of my friends had sabasword by it was actually Byakko shinken. Same with the brontosaurus thingy too.
Just looking at these keys makes me angry

And also why are they so goddamn ugly? Looks like the Power Rangers are on steroids or something. But then,IIRC,Saban likes to make everything look goddamn muscular...

  12. Anonymous Says:

So they're using a steroid LOL wkokwakokwkakok

Honestly i think the keys are cool and all but last i checked which i may be wrong here, but dont us kids have bigger hands than japanese kids?

  14. Anonymous Says:

To Anon 4:40, Just like Power Ranger action figures always have.

@anon1 You need to realize that this is bandai America. In America we pretty much cut back on details and show accuracy when it comes to toys. Since we are in a depression in all. Even though the detailing on these legend keys look identical to the gokaiger keys. I actually like the spring looked gimmick. Since I already collected a lot of ranger keys, I'm content with getting some of the American ranger keys that I didn't get with the japanese version i.e gold zeo ranger. And mixed the two versions for my collection. I can care less about the size and shit, either way if the availability is good with this, I'm buying some.

Those that are complaining about the size of the keys are mad. At least we are getting the keys!

  17. Anonymous Says:

...and when some kid chokes on it, they'll recall them and make the bigger keys...unfortunately its never 'if', its always a matter of time with these things

Bandai America doesn't have the same licensing rights and molds as Bandai Japan.

This all happened back in the Wild Force (Gaoranger) series. That was the last series to have the licensing rights, molds, etc as Bandai Japan.

Now Bandai of America just basically creates their own from what they see (scratch basically). That leaves it open to their own creativity as well.

Take a look at the toy changes from pre-Wild Force and post-Wild Force. You'll see exactly what I mean.

We just have to live with what we get in America. If not...buy from HLJ, AmiAmi, CSToys, BBToys, and/or go to Japan.

I have collected products from both bandai's (mainly BOA) for a long time. i am a newbie to BOJ products.

Wild Force was the last with the licensing rights and the same molds as BOJ. i thought it was jungle fury where that stopped with gekiranger's (its own source counterparts) molds.

BOA created zord builder from what it sees, i am pretty sure the BOJ mold is followed as the base model.

we live with what we get and what BOA sees. even though i know after wild force the quality declined, it is still good. i see anything of theirs as a quality product PR or not.

Some people here are so immature. For one, the keys are smaller for a cheaper cost to the consumer - they're a lot more expensive than buying a booster pack of the current cards if you keep the Japanese ones. They're spring-loaded like the original props, while the Japanese keys were in the show - so much better. Also, these are prototypes - rough designs... Of course the painting and print won't be amazing. It was just something to show off at an early stage - they're not being released until December people. Some people are so Japanese purist it's unbelievable - get off your high horse. Power Rangers will never be and was never meant to be Western Super Sentai.

I'm very dissapointed with the reduced key sized, while YES smaller keys will save plastic, the new smaller keys will need brand new tooling & investment - it also means it's FAR more likely that Bandai will drop Sentai teams from release... as they'll need to be remolded from scratch.

While the key flipping gimmick is fine... my childhood memories are made up on QUALITY toys, not the ones that traded in quality for cheap stunts.

Looks I'll have to continue importing keys in for my brothers Gokai cellular too. :'(

    steroid ranger keys...

Because Bandai America hate you, yes you personally, and make it their personal mission in life to deliberately engineer children's toys differently to other countries' childrens toys, because the tears of adults who watched Power Rangers when they were children have this distinct flavour that's like catnip to them.
